The Tree of Life (2011) - Fake Criterion
…or a film that actually did something important with the art of cinema?

“The Tree of Life” was, as I had predicted, completely snubbed at the Oscars this year despite it being the only actually important film to come out in over 25 years.
The irony of it all, is that instead they choose “The Artist” (an admittedly well made film). The central character of The Artist is a silent film star who is unable to adapt to change and innovation in cinema and eventually falls by the wayside until he is finally able to adjust to the changes and innovation in his art form and become a part of them. The funny thing is that The Academy had the chance to choose something that actually was innovative for Best Picture, something that took a real artistic risk and suceeded. However, they choose a movie using old, nostalgic methods, instead of something truly groundbreaking and masterful.

Also, The Tree of Life has the greatest color cinematography of all time, so the fact that it lost to a film who’s cinematography was created by a computer, is truly sad and quite stupid.

In 20 years, we’ll be studying the great works of Terrence Malick, not “The Artist”.

Best Film in decades.

Geniuses like this man come around once in a lifetime.
The 20s had Metropolis, the 30s had The Rules of the Game, the 40s had Citizen Kane and Casablanca, the 50s had Sunset Blvd, the 60s had 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 70s had The Godfather, the 80s had Ran, the 90s had Pulp Fiction, and we have The Tree of Life.
